In 1988 a new version Lotus Espirit Turbo incorporating rounder styling cues by designer Peter Stevens of McLaren F1 fame was released. The addition of a water to air intercooler known as the chargecooler produced up to 264 horsepower with 280 available on overboost, and zero to sixty miles per hour times reduced to 4.7 seconds, with a top speed of over 160 mph (260 km/h).

GTR featured a stronger gearbox (G5M-R), sodium filled exh. valve stems, aggressive front bumper and bonnet vents, stronger engine internals, and larger upgraded roller-bearing turbo.

BMW engineers claimed 0-60 Mph (0-100 Km/h) in 7.0 seconds and 130 Mph (211 Km/h). It caused quiet a storm in the mid-70’s. BMW had successfully produced Europe’s first turbo-charged production road car that could only be beaten by a Porsche Carrera with 210 Bhp. Enhanced with a boot spoiler to aid high-speed stability, wide arches to house 185 ×13 wheels, and aggressive front spoiler and no front bumper.

Toyota

Toyota Supra Turbo

The Toyota Supra Turbo JZ engine series have been the subject of extensive mods over the years worldwide having been sold into the US as LHD. The JZ engine is an amazing straight six cylinder of three litre & Twin Turbos, but usually these are replaced with a large single as the natural low down torque will overcome lag issues. 500HP is not enough to kill the standard bottom end of a 1&2JZ.

The AWD chassis seemed to come alive with the turbocharged flat four ‘Boxer’ 2.0ltr engine with more power than seemed possible for those addicted to performance. Even more power was possible with few mods and many were enhanced to provide almost supercar performance.
